If shorts are not for you, I completely understand - but please read on! I don't think I really wore shorts as an adult until my mid forties as I never loved showing much of my legs. I wish I could tell my younger self to get over that insecurity as I now I have a couple of pairs of shorts I really enjoy wearing each summer.

Shorts can be a summer wardrobe staple, but can also spark debate (and uncertainty as I can attest to from personal experience) when it comes to getting dressed and style. But, for many, they are a wardrobe essential. Versatile and functional, the right pair of shorts can seamlessly transition from neighbourhood strolls, restaurants, social gatherings —and even into office settings, depending on the work environment. When selecting a pair, I recommend opting for styles that skim the thighs rather than cling to them. Not only can this be pleasing visually, but increases ease of movement and comfort!

Currently, longer, relaxed-fit shorts with clean finishes (no distressing) are trending. Think Bermuda lengths, cotton poplin boxer styles, and A-line denim shorts—all of which offer a polished, modern silhouette that fits effortlessly into a well-rounded summer wardrobe.

I've put together some shorts looks here with a focus on styling rather than just wearing the clothes.

Whether or not you plan to wear shorts this summer, these styling tips will work just as easily for warm weather outfits consisting of: skirts, wide leg pants, culottes, denim, or dresses/jumpsuits...

I frequently hear from people that they want to have "effortless" style. I understand and always say that style does take a little effort and goes beyond just putting on the garments. But, it doesn't take much - a couple of intentional tweaks or accessories, incorporating some texture and dimension can transform wardrobe basics into a styled, interesting and personal look.

And, this collection of outfits will serve as an added bonus inspiration if you plan to style up some shorts this warm weather season! In each image you'll see on the left the clothing that forms the base of the outfit and on the right you'll see those same clothes with the addition of some simple styling tweaks and additions.

Look 1: Elevate basics with simple accessories

Silk or satin scarves are having a moment in fashion (yet are timeless) and are an easy way to add some personal style to a look. Tie it on the handle of a handbag as shown here, around your neck or in your hair. If you have one long enough, it can also be a fun around the waist. A simple tank or tee with a pull on short make an easy Summer look. Added styling tweak: tuck the top partially (and casually) over your hip to define the waist and style this look even more. Scarves not your thing? Never forget the power of adding accessories you love to a simple look (for example, right now I am loving stacking bracelets...).

Look 2: Take a button up shirt and denim combo to summer!

The basic white blouse and jeans gets a summer update (note: this could be your version: maybe it's chambray, striped, bold colour etc.). Play around with the styling and perhaps leave a few of the bottom buttons undone or do a side or half tuck. A long sleeved button up works just as easily if you don't have sleeveless. Plus, rolling up the sleeves adds a some extra intentional styling. Button ups can be a fabulous blank canvas for adding your personalized accessories and the collar feels elevated even though it is a comfy, casual look.

Look 3: Short sleeved button up as a layer

A short sleeve button up shirt can be the perfect third piece for a hot summer look. A third piece adds depth to a look and can often be achieved through a layer which can sometimes be tricky to incorporate in warmer weather. A shirt like this adds visual interest and dimension without compromising comfort in the heat. Leave the shirt open for an "I just threw this on" look - effortless.

Look 4: Remember the versatility of a set in the summer

A set like this is great for casual functions and also as a swim coverup! There are so many out there in solid colours or neutrals if prints aren't your thing. Take the look to the next level by adding accessories. Play around with the styling of a set and leave the top open if layering over bathing suit or tank, button a few of the buttons as shown, or tie shirt tails for a more cropped look.

Look 5: Incorporate an interesting colour story

Sometimes all it takes is an interesting colour story to take your look to the next level! The analogous pairing of red and pink (neighbours on the colour wheel so get along famously!) give this look visual interest. Have fun playing around with colour combos in your wardrobe. You can also get colour inspiration from nature or home decor. I also love an animal print year round.

Look 6: Dressing things up a bit...

Shorts can be a great deviation from a skirt in the summer and can be fun to dress up. If choosing to style shorts with heels, opt for shorts that have movement away from the body. Balance out the amount of leg shown with a flowy blouse with lightweight sheer sleeves. This proportion tip also works well when styling a mini skirt. This principle for balance also applies if you are wearing a summer outfit with little coverage on top, balance out with a longer pant or midi/maxi skirt on the bottom.

Look 7: Swap in your own belt

Swapping out the fabric belt that comes with a garment is an easy way to add personal style and sophistication. This tip also works well for dresses or skirts that come with a matching belt - trade for one of your own and you'll instantly notice how this elevates! This summer look is packed with texture and dimension with the linen suit, leathers, silk top and raffia bag (woven accessories are everywhere this season). This look is a reminder to play with texture and add in your own accessories to personalize.

Look 8: Proportion and Texture

The longer short is trending and offers those who may have frequently grabbed a capri pant or culotte may enjoy this option that also offers added coverage. Elevate an all black look with lots of hardware and a pop of print or colour in the handbag or shoe as shown here. Never forget the importance of tailoring. Longer shorts are having a moment, but the eye always goes to where a garment ends so you want to make sure it is in the right spot. While the longer short is nice for more coverage, it can shorten the overall look of your leg. Opt for higher rise to help elongate the look, also aim to have them end just above the knee (or even shorter if you are petite). Adding a belt as in this look also helps to draw the eye to a higher focal point. Pairing with a more fitted top or structured layer also helps to balance out the proportions.

I hope you were able to takeaway a couple of tips here that you can apply to your own wardrobe to help you still feel stylish even when the temperatures climb. Feel like shorts are a gap in your current summer wardrobe? I've done a round up here of some shorts currently in stores that have caught my eye.

Wishing you a wonderful summer!
