Every day style

I always say that my style clients and the people I aim to reach when it comes to style are "everyday" people. They aren't celebrities (aside from of their own lives, of course!), or ones who perhaps garner a lot of time in the spotlight. We all need to get dressed and my goal is to help people feel their best in their actual every day lives.

Often times I think people feel that "style" is only necessary in times when we need to get dressed up - perhaps for certain social or work occasions. And, if that's not part of your every day lifestyle, style doesn't need to be on the radar. This is where I completely disagree.

Style should be part of our every day. It impacts how we feel about ourselves when we show up in the world - no matter how casual or laidback our day to day activities are.

My top tips for achieving every day style:

1) Aim to LOVE (or at least really like) EVERYTHING you own.

This one is huge because by achieving this it means when you just grab something you will still feel ok in times you are rushed, tired, not feeling your best etc. We've all run into someone when we aren't feeling like we are pulled together and wish we'd been wearing something different! It takes just as much time to get dressed in pieces we like as it does to put on clothing that doesn't make us feel good.

Side note: I purchased this jacket on our honeymoon in Paris in 2017. Every time I pull it out of the closet it brings a smile to my face. It's so easy to put over a t-shirt and jeans and instantly feel pulled together.

2) Home life/errands etc. deserves good stuff too!

You don't need to be hanging around in old, dingy pieces just because you aren't leaving the house. The same goes for workout gear. For example: this NYC sweatshirt that connects to a place I love in a colour palette I enjoy is just as comfortable as one that doesn't have any sense of style.

So often, when I do a closet edit, people apologetically show me their comfy/lounge type clothing and say we don't need to look at it as it doesn't really matter. Yet, they may spend the majority of their time in these types of pieces. If you acquire a mindset that you should feel good in all your clothing no matter the formality level, you will most definitely up your overall style game. It will just become part of who you are.

3) Be realistic about how you actually spend your time.

I started my last year's Style Club by having members brainstorm or map out how they spend their time and what kind of activities they need to get dressed for throughout the week. This should correspond to what kinds of clothing you spend money on when strategically adding pieces to your wardrobe. This can be a really useful exercise. If a large chunk of time is spent exercising, doing errands etc., working from home - you should have clothing for those times that makes you feel good (yes, I know this relates back to the first two points - but it's all interconnected!).

One of the reasons I love my Style Club membership program so much is that it helps participants keep style on their radar on either a weekly or daily basis. They are receiving regular and ongoing support and inspiration. This in itself creates more of a mindset and a practice of every day style!

If this sounds like something that could also benefit you - I'd love you to join me!

If you don't already, I hope you will try and apply these simple steps to your wardrobe building and getting dressed routine - I promise you will notice a difference in how you look and feel every day.
