What to wear over the 2020 holiday season

It's still a bit early to know exactly what's in store for us this holiday season, but we know two things. 1) It will be different. 2) The holidays are coming regardless of the pandemic - and we deserve to celebrate despite all the protocols and new normal!

I don't know about you, but I started my Christmas shopping early this year as I'm doing the bulk of it on-line, and, word on the street is that delivery times will likely be longer than usual.

It makes sense then, that it's probably also a good time to start thinking about what to wear over the holidays.

Throughout the pandemic, comfy and cozy has definitely been a trend when it comes to getting dressed. That already feels quite festive. But, recently, people have also expressed a desire to elevate their dressing (I'm smiling). And, the holidays are a time when many of us like to amp things up more than usual - even if we are going to be at home.

Here's some inspiration to get you started (note: all garments shown in images are listed in my catalog linked below).

Festive or Cozy Pyjamas

A new pair of pyjamas has always been one of my Christmas traditions - which continues to this day. They get lots of wear over the holidays - and, likely even more this year. Plaid feels festive and these wine themed ones are speaking to me as well...who doesn't love holiday cheer?

Festive or Cozy On Top

Because the bulk of our socializing will likely be virtual, it's important to focus on what we're wearing on top. This time of year textures like velvet, eyelash, teddy/shearling or jewel details add a little something extra that feels festive. I am also loving this plaid pussy bow tie sweater from J Crew.

One and Done

No matter what time of year, I love the simplicity of wearing either a dress or jumpsuit. Sweater dresses are perfect for the season. I also love the idea of donning a traditional Christmas hue. This velvet jumpsuit from Joe Fresh looks so comfy yet is easy to style up or down - and has layering potential both under or over.

On the bottom

Leggings, lounge and jogger-style pants have been extra popular over the pandemic. Why not elevate them over the holidays by wearing them in a fabrication such as leather, satin or sequins?

Amp it up with accessories

Sparkly accessories are an easy way to amp up even the most casual of outfits - and sparkle always feels festive!

Sparkle

No matter what stage of normal we are in, I'll always pull out a little sparkle over the holiday season. Remember, sparkle isn't just for the holidays or evening. To dress down, pair with cozy knits or denim.

Holiday-inspired masks

It's strangely normal now to add masks to the mix when thinking about what we are wearing...anyone else plan their mask of choice around their outfits? I am loving the idea of something glittery, in a festive hue, or with some fun holiday graphics.

Personally, I think I'll be wearing a little something that falls in line with each of the above categories over this season.

The pieces I am wearing in my opening image are from holidays past and will likely all get some wear this season. Don't forget to shop your closet and assess what's already there. From my closet I'll be reaching for: my cozy cream eyelash sweater, my stretchy sequin skirt to pair with an oversized sweater, my sequin t-shirt as well as any graphic themed tees such as my "Prosecc Ho Ho Ho" gifted to me from a good friend last year.

Since Christmas will entail more time at home as well as some virtual gatherings, I've recently added two new cozy tops (shown below) which will be in my holiday season rotation. Both could work for casual virtual gatherings and are also great for festive lounging.

Note: the velvet cropped hoodie is linked in my catalog and comes in several colours. This candy-cane inspired confetti sweater was purchased from the Vancouver Fashion Truck - it sold out quickly, but I'd recommend watching their Thursday try-on sessions as they always have cute and cozy pieces.

I'm currently also eyeing this piece. If you are also a Schitt's Creek fan, I'm pretty sure you'll understand why!
