5 Tips for Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring



Dressing this time of year can be tricky, especially when the weather can be so inconsistent - warming up one minute and wet snow/torrential rain the next. By the time we reach mid March, I am so ready for a new rotation of clothing despite the fact that temperatures can continue to dip. That's when transitional dressing can come in so handy helping us step into the new season with style.

Don't forget the best place to start is always by shopping your own closet!

1) Pair opposite fabrics

A great example of transitional dressing is to pair a heavier pieces with lighter fabrics. Try a chunky knit with a chiffon skirt or a spring dress with a lightweight turtleneck layered beneath. A denim jacket always pairs well over a dress, skirt or trousers.

2) Swap out your dark denim for lighter washes

Infusing lighter denim in the wardrobe is an easy way to brighten up your outfits. This could be through a pair of jeans or in a jacket. Many people love white jeans, but they don't align with every style personality. There are so many options out there that can easily give your entire look a more spring-like vibe.

3) Jackets as a statement piece

Layering is a key factor in successful transitional dressing. You can wear your most comfortable style uniform (jeans and t-shirt, jogger style pants and light crew neck knit, sweater dress etc.) and add impact and extra warmth by adding an interesting jacket. There are so many options: boyfriend blazer, trench, moto, bomber or denim all of which work very well this time of year.

4) Footwear

White sneakers or some athleisure alternative are a wardrobe staple that will carry you comfortably (and stylishly) from now well into the fall. They pair with dresses, skirts, trousers, jeans and jumpsuits. If white isn't for you, why not try blush or metallic? Swap out heavier boots for a shootie style (shoe/bootie hybrid), or mules continue to be very on trend this season and are extremely versatile - nude is always flattering. 5) Play with a new silhouette on the bottom

Midi length pleated skirts continue to be very on trend and are flattering on so many body types. They pair well with heavier fabrics and will easily take you into Spring/Summer. Wide leg pants continue to be an on trend silhouette. A culotte is a fabulous (and stylish) piece to take you into the next season. Just be careful to watch that it hits you at a flattering part of your leg as the eye is always drawn to where a garment stops. It's always handy to have your tailor on hand to make sure you get the fit just right. Wide leg not for you? Baring your ankle with a cigarette style or straight leg silhouette is also a great way to transition. Again, be vigilant about ensuring that the hem rest at a flattering part of your leg (often right above the ankle or where the leg starts to narrow toward the ankle).

Giving a few of these tricks a go over the upcoming days and weeks should make your outfits feel a little lighter and more Spring-like. Of course, you can always do a few simple things beyond the wardrobe such as: a new lip colour (depending on your mood or skin tone you could do nude or bright), treat yourself to a mani or pedi or even a light spray tan if you aren't going on a sunny getaway any time soon.
